Marriott Bonvoy Review: The Value of 10,000 Bonus Points for Joining Through Reward a Friend
An analysis of Marriott Bonvoy for Hong Kong residents: member benefits, earning rules and the spending that earns nothing, the Reward a Friend terms, how to request an invitation through this site, a worked example in Hong Kong dollars, booking-channel restrictions, how points are used and how long they last, and user ratings.

Best for
Hong Kong residents who expect several separate paid stays at Marriott hotels in the coming year, whether local staycations or travel abroad, and who will book directly through Marriott's website or app.
Marriott Bonvoy is free to join, and direct bookings through Marriott's website or app bring member rates, free in-room Wi-Fi and mobile check-in, which makes membership worthwhile for anyone who already stays at Marriott hotels. Joining through this site's Reward a Friend invitation adds 2,000 bonus points for each of the first five paid stays completed within 365 days, 10,000 in total. At Marriott's published fixed Homes & Villas rate, 10,000 points are worth about US$56, or roughly HK$439: a respectable extra return, but not a reason to book. The essential conditions are joining for the first time through the invitation, with no prior Bonvoy account, and booking directly with Marriott; rooms booked through third-party platforms such as Booking.com and Expedia earn no points at all.
Pros
- Free membership, with member rates, free in-room Wi-Fi and mobile check-in on direct bookings
- 2,000 bonus points for each of the first five paid stays completed within 365 days, plus base points
- Most Marriott brands earn 10 base points per US dollar of room rate
- Each separate stay counts, so five one-night stays secure the full 10,000 points
- Besides hotel nights, points can be used on Homes & Villas at a fixed rate (178.57 points per US$1)
- Points do not expire provided there is earning or redemption at least once every 24 months
Watch-outs
- The referral must be established at enrolment: existing accounts cannot be referred, and a sponsor cannot be added later
- Rooms booked through third-party platforms such as Booking.com and Expedia earn no points and do not count
- Consecutive nights at one hotel count as a single stay; a three-night staycation counts once
- Points are earned on the room rate only; the 10% service charge and taxes earn nothing
- The invitation is sent by hand and is not instant
- At the Homes & Villas rate 10,000 points are worth about US$56, and hotel award prices vary by date

Programme overview and member benefits
Marriott Bonvoy is Marriott International's loyalty programme, covering its hotel brands from Courtyard and Moxy to W, JW Marriott and The Ritz-Carlton, with a number of participating hotels in Hong Kong. Anyone aged 18 or over may join free of charge, with one account per person. When booking through Marriott's website or app, members receive member rates, free in-room Wi-Fi and mobile check-in, and at hotels offering the service the phone can serve as a room key (Marriott Bonvoy benefits).
Status rises with nights stayed each year: Silver Elite at 10 nights (10% more points), Gold at 25 (25% more), Platinum at 50 (50% more) and Titanium at 75. For most members who join through a referral, the practical benefits are the base membership and the bonus points; status only begins to matter at ten or more nights a year with Marriott.
Earning rules and spending that earns nothing
Most brands earn 10 base points per US dollar of qualifying spend; Residence Inn, Element, TownePlace Suites, Protea, Four Points Flex, City Express, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott Executive Apartments and Homes & Villas earn 5, and StudioRes earns 4. Hong Kong dollar charges are converted to US dollars at a rate selected by Marriott, which may differ from that used on the bill (Program Rules).
Qualifying spend is the room rate plus eligible incidental charges billed to the room, such as dining. Taxes, service charges, resort fees, parking and gratuities earn nothing; Hong Kong hotels generally add a 10% service charge, and that portion earns no points.
The membership number must be provided when booking or at check-in. Rooms booked through a travel agent or an online travel platform such as Expedia, Booking.com, Hotwire or Priceline, group rates not paid directly to the hotel by the member, package and wholesale rates, complimentary rooms and vouchers are all non-qualifying rates, earning neither points nor member benefits.
The Reward a Friend terms
Under Marriott's Reward a Friend terms, a new member who joins through an invitation earns 2,000 bonus points for each paid stay, beginning with the first, for up to five stays completed within 365 days of enrolment: up to 10,000 bonus points in addition to the base points each stay earns. Stays must be at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels, and the earning preference must be set to points rather than airline miles (Reward a Friend terms).
A stay is defined as consecutive nights at the same hotel, irrespective of check-in and check-out activity. Five nights at one hotel count as a single stay and earn 2,000 points; one night at each of five hotels, or five separate visits to the same hotel, earn 10,000. Stays redeemed with points are not paid stays.
One rule requires particular attention: the sponsor must be established at enrolment and cannot be added afterwards. Joining Bonvoy through the app, a hotel or a booking before the invitation arrives forfeits the referral, and existing members cannot be referred at all.
Requesting the invitation through this site
Use the invitation request in the offer panel on this page and enter the email address at which you wish to receive the invitation. This site's editor then sends it by hand through Marriott's Reward a Friend form, so it is not instant. Marriott emails the invitation to you; join through the link in that email, and do not open a Bonvoy account by any other route in the meantime. Use your own email address, never someone else's.
Disclosure: the invitation is sent from this site's editor's Marriott Bonvoy account, so for each of your first five paid stays Marriott also awards us 2,000 points. Marriott limits each member to five referrals a year; whoever invites you, your own reward is the same 2,000 points per stay. Your email is used only to send the invitation.
Value analysis: a Hong Kong example
A worked example: five separate two-night stays at a room rate of HK$1,200 a night (before service charge and taxes), booked directly at brands earning 10 points per US dollar. Each HK$2,400 room charge is about US$306 at the European Central Bank's rate on 23 October 2026 (about HK$7.84 per US$1), or roughly 3,060 base points plus 2,000 bonus points. Over five stays that is about 15,300 base points and 10,000 bonus points, some 25,300 in total.
Marriott publishes a single fixed rate for points: Homes & Villas rentals cost 178.57 points per US dollar. On that basis the 10,000 bonus points are worth about US$56 (roughly HK$439) and all 25,300 points about US$142 (roughly HK$1,111). Outside promotions Marriott sells points at US$12.50 per 1,000, so the same number would cost US$125 (roughly HK$980) to buy; the reward is worth taking, but not worth buying at that price (Program Rules).
Hotel award nights have no fixed chart; the points required vary with the date and the hotel, so compare them with the cash rate before redeeming. Including the 10% service charge, the example above costs about HK$13,200, making the bonus worth some 3.3%: an extra return on existing travel plans, not a reason to add stays.
Booking channels and the definition of a stay
A weekend at a Marriott hotel booked through Booking.com or Expedia earns no points and does not count towards the five stays. A week at one hotel counts once; paying with points is not a paid stay; choosing airline miles removes eligibility. The 365 days run from the date of enrolment, not the date the invitation is requested, so it is prudent to enrol shortly before the first stay.
If points for a stay do not post, Marriott accepts missing-credit requests up to one year after the stay; keep booking confirmations and folios. New members may also request points for eligible stays in the 30 days before enrolment, but the Reward a Friend bonus covers only stays in the 365 days after enrolment (Program Rules).
Using points and how long they last
Points can be redeemed for hotel nights, Homes & Villas rentals and other rewards, or converted to airline miles. On award stays of five consecutive nights the cheapest night is free (Marriott calls this Stay for 5, Pay for 4), which makes longer redemptions better value.
Points remain valid as long as the account records qualifying activity, such as a stay or earning or redeeming points, at least once every 24 months. After 24 consecutive months without activity all points are forfeited and cannot be reinstated; a modest stay or redemption every year or two is enough to preserve them.
User ratings
As at 24 October 2026, the Marriott Bonvoy app was rated 4.8 on the Hong Kong App Store (26,563 ratings) and 4.7 on Google Play in Hong Kong (558,707 ratings worldwide). The overall scores are high, but the low ratings are consistent in substance.
Members report frequent password resets on login, difficulty reaching a human agent, errors when spending points on the shopping site, older devices that cannot update to iOS 18 being unable to run the app, and promotional bonus points failing to post. It is advisable to screenshot the rate terms before booking and to confirm after every stay that the points and the 2,000-point bonus have been credited.
Joining, privacy and leaving
Membership is free, requires the member to be 18 or over, and is limited to one account per person. Personal data passes to Marriott, whose data security record merits attention: in October 2020 the UK Information Commissioner's Office fined Marriott £18.4 million over the breach of the Starwood guest reservation database, which affected around 339 million guest records worldwide (ICO penalty notice).
To leave, give written notice to Marriott Bonvoy Member Support. On cancellation, unredeemed points, awards and status are forfeited immediately, so points should be used first.
Who it suits, and who it does not
Joining through the invitation suits those without a Bonvoy account who expect at least several separate paid stays booked directly with Marriott in the coming year, such as local staycations, business trips or holidays. Five such stays bring an additional 10,000 points at no extra cost.
It is unnecessary for those who already hold an account, who usually book hotels through comparison or package platforms, whose Marriott stays would amount to a single long trip, or who would forgo a cheaper hotel purely for the points. The full bonus is worth about HK$439, and a cheaper room elsewhere is often the better choice.

- Can an existing Marriott Bonvoy member use the invitation?
- No. Marriott establishes the sponsor at enrolment and does not add one later, so only those joining for the first time through the invitation qualify.
