Best for

Hong Kong residents whose phones support eSIM, who take short trips to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand or the Mainland, need mobile data only, are comfortable paying in US dollars, and are prepared to check every add-on before paying.

Global YO is competitively priced for popular Asian destinations: 5GB (15 days) is listed at US$6.99 (about HK$55) for Thailand, US$8.99 (about HK$70) for the Mainland and US$11.99 (about HK$94) for Japan and South Korea, and hotspot sharing is allowed. Its shortcomings lie in the details: it provides 4G data only, with no phone number; for the daily high-speed allowance on "unlimited" plans, Global YO gives two figures, 1GB and 3GB, after which speeds drop to 512kbps; and the FAQs, the terms and the plan information each state a different limit on how much of a plan's price YOYO$ can cover. Hong Kong readers should first confirm that their phone supports eSIM, as most Hong Kong-model iPhones have only two physical SIM slots. Joining through this site's link and buying a first data plan earns 1,000 YOYO$ (about US$10, or about HK$78), according to the in-app invite screen; they can be used towards future plans, although the share of each plan they can cover is set on the plan details screen. The greatest caution is needed with the VPN trial: after one month it charges US$4.99 a month automatically, and six months of a forgotten subscription cost more than the data for an entire trip to Japan.

Pros

  • Competitive list prices for popular Asian destinations: 5GB for US$6.99 in Thailand, US$8.99 on the Mainland and US$11.99 in Japan and South Korea (all 15 days)
  • A single Asia Explorer plan covers 24 countries and regions, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the Mainland and Macao
  • Every plan allows personal hotspot sharing, and no identity documents are required to buy
  • Can be installed before departure, with plans for other destinations starting only on arrival; an eSIM in use can be topped up
  • YOYO$ can be put towards plans, and eligible users in approved regions can also redeem them to a Bancus Visa card
  • Rated about 4.5 on both the UK and US App Stores, and 4.47 on Google Play (5,632 ratings)

Watch-outs

  • Most iPhones bought in Hong Kong, Macao and the Mainland have no eSIM and cannot use the service
  • 4G/LTE data only, with no phone number and no SMS
  • "Unlimited" plans cap daily high-speed data (1GB or 3GB, depending on the official source), after which speeds drop to 512kbps
  • The VPN trial charges US$4.99 a month automatically after one month, and some users complain of unexpected charges
  • Prices are in US dollars, so credit cards may add a foreign currency transaction fee
  • An eSIM cannot be reinstalled once deleted; used data is not refunded, and according to the FAQs only an unactivated eSIM qualifies for a full refund within 30 days

The operator and the nature of the service

Global YO is operated by YOVERSE INC., a subsidiary of Yonder Media Mobile Inc. of the United States, with an address in the Bronx, New York. Section 16 of the terms provides that they are governed by the laws of the United States and the State of New York and that, except where applicable law provides otherwise, disputes must be brought individually in the federal district courts in New York, with class actions excluded; the same section also states that mandatory consumer protection rights in the user's place of residence are unaffected. Even so, pursuing a claim across borders would not be convenient for Hong Kong users, and this site has not checked whether the company holds any telecommunications licence in Hong Kong.

Section 1.1 of the terms explains that voice and data services may be provided by third-party suppliers, and that network technology and speeds depend on local coverage and congestion. The plan pages on the official website state: 4G/LTE network, personal hotspot sharing allowed, no SMS and no phone number, and no identity documents required to buy. The Google Play listing claims coverage of more than 200 countries and regions.

Buyers must be aged 18 or over; registration requires your full name, gender, date of birth, address, email address and mobile number (sections 1.4 and 4.1 of the terms). An account can be signed in on several devices, but purchased data can be used on only one device at a time (section 4.2). Besides the eSIM store, the app offers videos and live streams, an NFT wallet, an AI assistant named Yolanda and an internet calling service, YO SHOUT; users who download it only to get online should be aware of the other promotions in the interface.

Whether phones bought in Hong Kong can use it

This is the first point Hong Kong readers need to confirm. According to an Apple support article published on 17 September 2026, the following iPhones bought in Hong Kong or Macao take two physical nano-SIM cards, have no eSIM and cannot install Global YO: iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, the entire 14 and 15 ranges, 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, the entire 11 range, XS Max and XR. Apple lists the following models as having eSIM in Hong Kong or Macao: iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, 17e, 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, Air, 16e, 13 mini, 12 mini, SE (2nd and 3rd generation) and XS.

For iPhones bought on the Mainland, Apple states that only the 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, 17e and Air support eSIM. Global YO's own compatibility page (marked as of August 2026) also states that iPhones from Hong Kong, Macao and the Mainland do not support eSIM, but lists only the 13 mini, 12 mini, SE (2020) and XS as exceptions, omitting newer models such as the 16e, the 17 range and the Air; Apple's information should be relied on instead. The same page also states that the Hong Kong versions of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 2 do not support eSIM.

If your phone supports dual SIM, you can keep your Hong Kong SIM card in place for SMS such as bank one-time passwords while using Global YO for mobile data. The FAQs recommend turning off the phone's "Allow Cellular Data Switching" when roaming if you want to use Global YO data only, so that the Hong Kong SIM card does not use data abroad; whether receiving SMS on the Hong Kong SIM card is charged depends on your local carrier's roaming arrangements.

Plan types, networks and validity

Single-destination plans come in a uniform range: 1GB (3 days), 3GB (15 days), 5GB (15 days), 10GB (30 days), 20GB (30 days), 50GB (45 days) and 100GB (60 days), plus "unlimited" plans of 3, 7, 15 and 30 days. Regional plans include Asia Explorer (24 countries and regions, covering Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the Mainland, Macao, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam, among others) and Europe Explorer (42 countries, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Turkey); the global plan, Global Explorer 100, covers 100 countries, with 10GB valid for 180 days at a list price of US$25.99 (about HK$203). Macao also has its own single-destination plan (on the CTM network), and Asia Explorer covers Macao as well.

Networks used by single-destination plans (according to the plan pages): KDDI in Japan, KT in South Korea, Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan, AIS in Thailand, China Unicom on the Mainland, 3, EE and O2 in the United Kingdom, and AT&T in the United States. In some places Asia Explorer can connect to more networks, for example DOCOMO and KDDI in Japan, and China Mobile and China Unicom on the Mainland. Global YO does not state whether services such as Google and WhatsApp can be used on the Mainland without additional tools, and this site has not been able to verify this.

As for validity, plans for other destinations can be installed before departure and start only on arrival; a plan can also be activated manually later under "My eSIM" in the app. A one-day plan runs for 24 hours from activation, not until midnight. Unused data on a single-destination plan cannot be transferred to another destination, whereas regional and global plans can be used anywhere within their coverage. Note that Asia Explorer's coverage includes Hong Kong itself; if you install it in Hong Kong, it is advisable to choose manual activation later, so that the validity period does not start early.

"Unlimited" plans are not free of speed limits. The FAQs state 1GB of high-speed data per day, after which some networks slow down; the plan information on the official website states 3GB per day, after which speeds drop to 512kbps, resetting daily. The two are inconsistent, so before buying, rely on the cap shown on the plan details screen in the app. Those who watch a lot of video every day or share a hotspot with several devices should consider a large fixed-data plan instead.

Prices for the destinations Hong Kong residents visit most

Global YO prices in US dollars. The following are list prices on the official plan pages on 13 October 2026 (excluding that day's promotion), converted at about HK$7.8 to US$1 (the Linked Exchange Rate band is 7.75 to 7.85): 5GB (15 days) costs US$11.99 (about HK$94) in Japan and South Korea, US$9.99 (about HK$78) in Taiwan, US$6.99 (about HK$55) in Thailand and US$8.99 (about HK$70) on the Mainland; Asia Explorer 5GB costs US$16.99 (about HK$133). A 7-day "unlimited" plan costs US$21.99 (about HK$172) in Japan, US$17.99 (about HK$140) in South Korea and Taiwan, US$16.99 (about HK$133) on the Mainland and US$13.99 (about HK$109) in Thailand. For the United Kingdom or several European countries, Europe Explorer 5GB (15 days) costs US$10.99 (about HK$86).

Take a five-day trip to Japan as an example: for those who use only maps and messaging apps, 3GB (15 days) at US$7.99 (about HK$62) may be sufficient; heavier users can choose the 7-day "unlimited" plan at US$21.99, but must accept the daily speed limit described above. For a single trip to both Japan and South Korea, buying two 3GB plans separately costs US$15.98 in total (6GB in all), similar to the US$16.99 of Asia Explorer 5GB; the advantage of the regional plan is that only one eSIM needs to be installed and its data can be used in both places, not a lower price.

Promotions change frequently, and some last only one day. For example, the "Happy Tuesday" promotion on 13 October offered up to 40% off plus 20% back in YOYO$, valid only from 00:01 to 23:59 Coordinated Universal Time that day (8:01 a.m. that day to 7:59 a.m. the following day, Hong Kong time); section 2.2 of the terms states that promotions do not apply retrospectively. This article therefore quotes list prices only; the actual price is the one shown at payment.

The payment methods shown on the official website are Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay; this site has not been able to verify whether payment can be settled in Hong Kong dollars. If settled in US dollars, the card issuer may charge a foreign currency transaction fee: assuming a fee of 1.95%, a plan of about HK$94 costs about HK$1.8 more, subject to the terms of the individual card.

Global YO list prices in US dollars for the destinations Hong Kong residents visit most (13 October 2026, excluding promotions, US$1 about HK$7.8). 5GB 15-day plans: Japan (KDDI) and South Korea (KT) US$11.99 (about HK$94), Taiwan (Chunghwa Telecom) US$9.99 (about HK$78), Thailand (AIS) US$6.99 (about HK$55), the Mainland (China Unicom) US$8.99 (about HK$70), Asia Explorer covering 24 countries and regions US$16.99 (about HK$133). 7-day "unlimited" plans: Japan US$21.99 (about HK$172), South Korea or Taiwan US$17.99 (about HK$140), the Mainland US$16.99 (about HK$133), Thailand US$13.99 (about HK$109). "Unlimited" plans cap daily high-speed data: 3GB and then 512kbps according to the website's plan information, 1GB according to the FAQs.

Installation, activation and top-ups

After purchase, the QR code for installation is available in the app, on the website or by email, and the eSIM must be installed while connected to Wi-Fi. An eSIM needs to be installed only once; the FAQs warn that most eSIMs can be activated only once and cannot be reinstalled once deleted, so changing or losing your phone means buying a new eSIM. If problems arise after a plan has been activated, Global YO advises against deleting the eSIM and recommends contacting customer service first.

If the QR code does not work, the eSIM may already have been installed; check the SIM section of the phone's settings. If it is installed and selected but cannot get online, the FAQs give manual settings: set the APN to and leave the username and password blank. If it still cannot connect, email [email protected] with your location, your phone model and a screenshot of the APN settings.

Remaining data can be checked under "My eSIM" in the app; an eSIM in use can be topped up in the same place, and several eSIMs can be bought for the same destination. As plans for other destinations start only on arrival, it is advisable to complete installation in Hong Kong before departure and to turn on mobile data for that line after arrival.

YOYO$: earning, using and cashing out

YOYO$ are Global YO's promotional points. The Google Play listing states that 100 YOYO$ = US$1; section 1.5 of the terms, however, provides that YOYO$ are not legal tender, electronic money or a stored value instrument and have no monetary value outside Global YO, and that any value shown on redemption is only an estimate, not a fixed exchange rate.

On earning, the FAQs state that every minute spent in the app earns 1 YOYO$; the website's promotion settings show a standard reward of 5% of the purchase amount, rising to 20% on the 13 October promotion day. Some users report that time spent in the app was not credited as YOYO$.

On using them, YOYO$ can cover part of the price when buying a data plan, but accounts of the limit differ: the FAQs state up to 50%, section 2.3 of the terms states up to 100%, and the plan information on the official website shows limits of about 83% to 99%. The limit shown on the plan details screen at checkout should be relied on. The terms also provide that YOYO$ will not expire merely through the passage of time only if there is at least one transaction earning YOYO$ in each calendar year.

Section 17 of the terms also provides a redemption feature: eligible users can transfer YOYO$ to the Bancus platform and redeem them as a US dollar balance on a Visa card. The conditions are being aged 18 or over, having made at least two qualifying purchases on the account, having spent at least US$15 in total, and having made at least one purchase in the last six months; each redemption must be at least 1,000 YOYO$, Bancus charges a 4% fee on amounts transferred to the card, and the digital card can be activated only when the wallet holds at least US$10. At 1,000 YOYO$ (about US$10), about US$9.60 remains after the fee, and spending in Hong Kong is then converted into Hong Kong dollars by Visa. The feature is available only in regions expressly approved by Global YO and Bancus; this site has not been able to verify whether Hong Kong is included, and a completed redemption cannot be reversed.

YOYO$ at a glance: 100 YOYO$ = US$1 (about HK$7.8). Earning: 1 YOYO$ for every minute spent in the app; joining through this site's link and buying a first data plan earns 1,000 YOYO$ (about US$10, according to the in-app invite screen); standard purchases earn 5% back, 20% on the 13 October promotion day. Accounts of the limit on covering plan prices differ: up to 50% in the FAQs, up to 100% in the terms, about 83% to 99% in the website's plan information; the plan screen at checkout applies. Redeeming to a Bancus Visa card: at least 1,000 YOYO$ (about US$10) each time, about US$9.60 after the 4% fee; requires being 18 or over, at least two purchases, US$15 in total and a purchase within the last six months; approved regions only, and whether Hong Kong is included has not been verified. Example: after a first purchase of Japan 5GB (US$11.99) through this site's link, you receive 1,000 YOYO$, worth about US$10 (about HK$78), usable towards future plans subject to each plan's limit; the latest terms in the app apply. At least one YOYO$-earning transaction is required in each calendar year.

The referral reward: YOYO$ through this site's link, and the conditions

If you download the app through the link on this page and create a new Global YO account, the referral code is carried over by the link; referrals apply only to new accounts and take effect only when you register through the link. According to the in-app "Refer & Earn" invite screen (13 October 2026), the referred user receives 1,000 YOYO$ (shown on the screen as $10) after their first data plan purchase, to be used on data plans and offers. At the rate of 100 YOYO$ = US$1 stated in the Google Play listing, this is worth about US$10 (about HK$78); the terms provide that any value shown is only an estimate.

The reward is tied to the first plan and is credited only once a purchase is completed, and purchasers must be aged 18 or over; registering without buying earns nothing. The reward is paid in YOYO$, not cash; Global YO has not published when it is credited, and it is subject to the usage limits and expiry rules described above: the share of each plan that YOYO$ can cover is as shown on the plan details screen at checkout. Other Global YO pages and app store listings have given different figures; for joining through this site's link, the reward shown on the in-app invite screen applies. The latest terms in the app prevail in all cases.

Disclosure: this is this site's referral link. According to the in-app invite screen, this site receives 50 YOYO$ when a friend registers through the link and a further 1,000 YOYO$ after the friend's first data plan purchase, and may also receive a share of their purchase amount (labelled "Give 5, Get 50%" on the invite screen).

Add-ons at checkout: the VPN trial and YO SHOUT

Global YO also sells a VPN subscription. The App Store listings (UK and Hong Kong) state that new subscribers receive a one-month free trial, after which US$4.99 a month (about HK$39; the Hong Kong App Store lists the one-month VPN plan at HK$38) is charged, renewing automatically; the subscription must be cancelled in your Apple ID account settings at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, otherwise the charge is taken within the 24 hours before the period ends. The Google Play listing indicates that the VPN can be subscribed to on its own or bundled with an eSIM plan. On Trustpilot, users complained in both August and September 2026 of unexpected recurring charges after the VPN trial; on the US App Store, users complained of monthly charges over the same period.

For a single trip to Japan, the 5GB plan costs US$11.99; forgetting to cancel for six months after the trial brings VPN charges to US$29.94 (about HK$234), two and a half times the cost of the data. Section 6 of the terms also provides that a cancellation made through Global YO requires a confirmation notice; without one, the cancellation may not have taken effect and charges may continue. Read the order carefully before paying; if a trial has started, note its end date at once and confirm the cancellation in the subscription settings of the App Store or Google Play.

YO SHOUT is the app's internet calling service, which is also promoted at checkout. It can call numbers worldwide, but can receive calls only from other app users, and the people you call cannot ring back the number displayed; some users report that the service did not work. Travellers who need only internet access have no need to add it.

How the Global YO VPN trial works: 1. a one-month free trial begins (Google Play listing: the VPN can be subscribed to on its own or bundled with an eSIM plan); 2. it must be cancelled in Apple ID account settings at least 24 hours before the trial ends, otherwise it renews automatically; 3. US$4.99 a month (about HK$39; HK$38 on the Hong Kong App Store) is then charged until cancelled. Example: a Japan 5GB 15-day plan costs US$11.99 (about HK$94), while six months of a VPN not cancelled after the trial cost US$29.94 (about HK$234). Section 6 of the terms: a cancellation through Global YO requires a confirmation notice, otherwise charges may continue.

Refunds and account deletion

The refund rules listed in the FAQs: an unactivated eSIM can be fully refunded within 30 days; a refund is available if the eSIM cannot be installed or used because of a technical problem on Global YO's side; and if the phone is incompatible and the eSIM has not been used, one refund is available within 30 days. There are no partial refunds for used data, and no refunds for expired unactivated eSIMs, purchases made through third parties, or cases involving fraud or abuse.

Requests must be made by email to [email protected] with the order number and details of the problem; once approved, a refund may take up to 30 working days to arrive. Section 2.1 of the terms is stricter, providing that products are generally non-refundable once delivered unless applicable consumer protection law or app store rules require otherwise. This site takes the stricter terms as its basis: user reviews frequently describe refunds being refused after installation or activation, so it is advisable to buy only once your itinerary is settled, and not to activate the eSIM until you are sure it will work.

Section 3 of the terms provides that users may contact Global YO at any time to delete their account, after which their data will be deleted, except where retention is required by law. The terms do not state what happens to any remaining YOYO$ when an account is deleted, so anyone with a balance should use it first.

User reviews

As at 13 October 2026, the Global YO app was rated 3.73 on the App Store (Hong Kong), from only 15 ratings, 4.51 in the UK (571 ratings) and 4.58 in the US (589 ratings); Google Play, viewed from the UK, shows 4.47 (5,632 ratings) and more than 100,000 downloads. On Trustpilot it is rated 4.0 (1,302 reviews), with five-star reviews making up 60% and one-star reviews 23%; the company replies to every negative review, though some replies were attached to the wrong review.

The more common complaints include: eSIMs that cannot be installed or activated, or an installation code shown as "no longer valid"; slow customer service, with chats closed before being answered; refunds refused after installation or activation; severe slowdowns on "unlimited" plans once the daily cap is reached; only 3G or slow speeds in some places, with reviews mentioning Japan, Sri Lanka, Morocco, Turkey and the UAE; unexpected charges related to the VPN trial; an app crowded with social feeds, live streams, NFTs and an AI assistant; YO SHOUT being pushed at checkout, with some users saying it did not work; price increases, with users saying a 1GB plan rose from US$1 to US$3.89; and time spent in the app not being credited as YOYO$.

Positive reviews, by contrast, focus on reasonable prices, simple installation, named customer service staff who helped resolve problems, broad coverage (including the Mainland) and hotspot sharing that works properly.

Who it suits, and who it does not

Suitable for: Hong Kong residents whose phones support eSIM, taking short trips to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand or the Mainland and needing data only; travellers visiting several places on one trip who can make good use of Asia Explorer; and users who habitually check their order before paying and can set an APN themselves.

Not suitable for: those using a Hong Kong or Mainland iPhone model without eSIM; those who need a local phone number or SMS; those who need large amounts of high-speed data every day and will not accept reduced speeds; those who do not wish to pay in US dollars or bear foreign currency fees; and those who expect fast customer service and lenient refunds when problems arise.

FAQ

Can iPhones bought in Hong Kong use Global YO?
It depends on the model. According to Apple, Hong Kong and Macao versions of the iPhone 11 to 16 ranges (except the 12 mini, 13 mini and 16e), the XR and the XS Max have only two physical SIM slots and cannot use eSIM; the 18 Pro models, the 17 range, the Air, 16e, 13 mini, 12 mini, SE (2nd and 3rd generation) and XS have eSIM.
Does Global YO provide a phone number? Can I still receive bank SMS?
Global YO provides data only, with no phone number and no SMS. If your phone supports dual SIM, you can keep your Hong Kong SIM card for SMS and turn off "Allow Cellular Data Switching", so that the Hong Kong SIM card does not use data abroad.
Are "unlimited" plans free of speed limits?
No. The FAQs state 1GB of high-speed data per day, while the plan information on the official website states 3GB per day, after which speeds drop to 512kbps, resetting daily. The plan details screen in the app applies.
How many YOYO$ does joining by referral earn?
According to the in-app invite screen, joining through this site's link and buying a first data plan earns 1,000 YOYO$ (about US$10, or about HK$78), usable towards future plans; the share of each plan they can cover is set on the plan details screen. The latest terms in the app apply.
Can YOYO$ be exchanged for cash?
Generally they can only be used towards Global YO purchases. Eligible users can redeem them to a Bancus US dollar Visa card, at least 1,000 YOYO$ at a time, with a 4% fee; this is limited to approved regions, and whether Hong Kong is included has not been verified.
How can I avoid automatic VPN charges?
Check whether the order includes a VPN trial before paying. If you subscribed through the App Store, cancel in your Apple ID account settings at least 24 hours before the trial ends; if you cancel through Global YO, you must receive a confirmation notice, otherwise charges may continue.
Can I get a refund if I have bought a plan but not activated it?
The FAQs state that an unactivated eSIM can be fully refunded within 30 days; email [email protected] with the order number, and processing takes up to 30 working days. The terms, however, state that products are generally non-refundable once delivered, so it is advisable to buy only once your itinerary is settled.
Can I install it in Hong Kong before departure?
Yes, and installing before departure while connected to Wi-Fi is recommended; plans for other destinations start only on arrival. However, Asia Explorer's coverage includes Hong Kong, so when installing it, choose to activate it manually later under "My eSIM", so that the validity period does not start early.
