Japan from Hong Kong: choosing payments, eSIMs and airport arrangements

Compare yen cash, cards and connectivity around your Japan itinerary. Check Hong Kong device variants, validity, roaming and lounge location before counting referral discounts.
借定唔借?還得到先好借! (To borrow or not to borrow? Borrow only if you can repay!)
Define this trip's requirements first
List accommodation, airport and local transport, destinations, trip length and essential apps. City shopping, rural driving and sharing a hotspot need different acceptance, coverage and data. Price per GB or referral discount alone cannot answer those questions.
This is a planning framework, rather than a mobile-network test or comprehensive product ranking. Confirm flights, entry documents and individual bookings with airlines and Japanese authorities; a data purchase does not complete every travel arrangement.
Give cash, payment cards and transport credit separate roles
| Method | Potential use | Check before departure |
|---|---|---|
| Yen cash | Cash-only venues and failed-payment backup | Plan around actual expenses, rather than a universal cash amount |
| Hong Kong credit/debit card | Shopping and bookings at accepting merchants | Overseas settings, limits, PIN, conversion, fees and repayment funds |
| IC cards such as Suica/PASMO | Supported transport and stored-value merchants | Routes, physical/mobile version, purchase and top-up methods; not every ticket qualifies |
| Overseas ATM | Replenishing cash when needed | Card/ATM support, hours and both operators' fees; credit-card withdrawals may be cash advances |
JNTO describes general acceptance of international cards alongside payment and short-distance transport exceptions. An IC card is not an unlimited rail pass; do not assume every version accepts a Hong Kong card for top-ups.
Compare yen and HKD by the total payment cost
An overseas HKD checkout can involve dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. Compare the displayed yen amount, HKD amount and exchange rate, then issuer FX and cross-border HKD fees. HKD settlement does not remove conversion costs. HKMA's 2015 explanation supplies principles, rather than current fee quotations.
Budget using funds available for full repayment before checking card rewards, caps and exclusions. Refunds may also be affected by conversion and fees. The draft Hong Kong card foundation explains borrowing, miles and charges; a welcome threshold should not increase your trip spending.
Check the actual version of a Hong Kong phone
Use device settings and manufacturer support to confirm model, sales region, operating system, eSIM support and carrier lock. Apple highlights certain Hong Kong and Macao models with two nano-SIMs: a shared series name does not establish the overseas version's eSIM capability. For Android, check your own model rather than following iPhone settings.
If unsupported or locked, compare a physical travel SIM, your Hong Kong carrier's roaming and a pocket Wi-Fi rental. Inspect collection, return, deposits, sharing and battery needs. Resolve device compatibility before buying an eSIM.
Compare data options on matching terms
| Factor | Read this | Effect on the itinerary |
|---|---|---|
| Location and network | Japan coverage, partner networks and actual destinations | City descriptions do not establish signal in every building or rural area |
| Data and speed | Total versus daily allowance, overage and fair-use rules | Unlimited still needs a throttling check; do not infer constant high speed |
| Validity and start | Activation deadline after purchase, installation/connection start and trip dates | Early installation can consume usable days |
| Sharing, calls and continued use | Hotspot rules, calls/SMS, top-ups and renewals | Data does not necessarily include a Japanese number; sharing also needs power |
Total cost includes the plan, necessary extras, payment fees and required backup. Airalo's Japan page supplies current packages; this guide does not freeze live prices or network lists into the text.
Two itineraries: needs before discounts
For a short urban Tokyo trip mainly using maps and messages, consult your previous data use, download offline routes and compare plans covering the entire visit. Decide whether each traveller needs independent connectivity. A larger referral discount is no reason to buy unnecessary data.
For rural Hokkaido driving or a shared hotspot, prioritise destination coverage information, sharing rules and backup navigation. Japan coverage does not establish signal on every road. This example assigns no invented allowance and promises no particular provider's reception.
Schedule installation and activation around the package
- Before paying, save package name, destination, duration, allowance, validity policy, activation deadline and refund conditions.
- Read whether installation starts the clock. Airalo distinguishes installation-start and supported-network-start packages; early installation cannot be universal advice.
- Install at the appropriate time with stable internet, and label the travel and home lines. Saily advises preparing before departure and following its instructions for travel-line data roaming.
- On arrival select the travel line for data, check roaming and APN requirements, and handle automatic data switching according to device and provider guidance.
- Test maps and messaging. If offline, check plan status, coverage, selected line and APN before contacting official support; deleting the eSIM should not be your first step.
Check referrals after choosing a suitable plan
| Record | Current reward | Claim checks |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | Offer record: US$3 off | New customer's first purchase, code at signup or checkout; other promotions can affect eligibility, so inspect the actual deduction |
| Saily | Offer record: US$5–US$10 off | First checkout, account currency and standard/Ultra plan determine the discount; minimum price and no promotion stacking apply |
| Roamless | Offer record: US$5 credit | Enter in the app then make an eligible purchase; reward is data credit, not withdrawable cash, and cannot combine with a promo code on that purchase |
These existing records are not new Japan-specific promotions. Check Japan packages and personal eligibility individually, rather than treating the headline reward as money already saved.

Airport lounges: can this flight actually use them?
| Check | Information needed | Decision principle |
|---|---|---|
| Airport and position | Narita/Haneda or another airport, terminal, airside/landside, international/domestic flight | An airport name does not put the facility on your boarding route |
| Hours and usable time | Opening hours, boarding time, stay limit and entry restrictions | For a short usable window, compare ordinary seating and dining |
| Membership and companions | Your plan, visit allowance, guest/child charges and documents | Restaurant or rest listings still require checking inclusion in your particular plan |
Priority Pass's Narita NOA page illustrates facility-specific location and entry conditions. No fixed membership price or available space is promised here; free registration or welcome points are not a free lounge visit.
Records to keep and checks after returning
- Save hotel addresses, bookings, airport transport and official support offline so they remain accessible without data.
- Retain payment currency, receipts and package terms. Refunds and disputes follow the provider's process and individual circumstances.
- Back in Hong Kong, restore local data and review roaming, possible renewals and remaining plans. Do not assume every plan automatically ends.
- Check card statements, carrier bills and final rewards against the original trip budget.

FAQ
- Does every Hong Kong iPhone support a travel eSIM?
- Check exact model, sales region and carrier lock. Some Hong Kong and Macao models use two physical SIMs; the series name alone is insufficient.
- Does installation start the package's days?
- It depends. Airalo describes both installation-start and supported-network-start packages. Check your specific policy before paying or installing.
- Can travel data keep Hong Kong bank SMS available?
- That needs an appropriate active Hong Kong line and your carrier's overseas service. Disabling the primary SIM can stop SMS; keeping it active needs a fee check. Receipt and free service should not be assumed.
- Is an HKD checkout easier for assessing cost?
- It can involve DCC and cross-border fees. Compare yen/HKD totals, conversion and issuer charges, rather than just the displayed currency.
- Does a lounge directory listing establish entry?
- Check terminal, airside/landside position, hours, your membership and guests. Capacity can also affect access. A directory is not your entry confirmation.
