Redeeming Asia Miles for flights: miles, taxes, seats and expiry

By Perk editor· Last verified: 9 October 2026 (HKT)· 8 min read

Before a Hong Kong resident redeems Asia Miles, check the miles already in the account, the cash taxes, seat limits, one-way and return rules, and expiry. A chart of miles is not a cash value.

Four things to have ready

  1. The usable miles in one account, and that balance's expiry date.
  2. A fixed origin, destination, date and number of passengers. Do not assume a seat for a trip that is not fixed.
  3. Cash for taxes and surcharges. Miles do not replace that cash.
  4. The card or partner rule for transferring points into Asia Miles, including any fee and the timing. Points not yet credited cannot be redeemed.

One-way, return and changes each have a limit

ItemLimit written in the termsStill check at booking
One-way awardExcept oneworld multi-carrier awards and HK Express: at most 2 sectors and 1 transfer, and the transfer no longer than 24 hoursWhether the origin and destination cities still count as one-way
Return awardExcept oneworld multi-carrier awards and HK Express: at most 4 sectors and 1 stopoverWhether the stopover changes the miles or the zone
SeatsThe airline may limit how many award seats it releasesWhether that cabin still has an award seat on the search
WaitlistAt most 10 upgrade or companion award waitlists on one account at a timeA full list means cancelling one before adding another
Ticket validity12 months from the date of issue, unless stated otherwiseWhether a change keeps the same expiry

These limits are taken from the Cathay membership terms effective 1 January 2026. Required miles and taxes are fixed only at booking.

Miles are not a fixed cash price

Compare the cash fare you would actually pay for that date and cabin, then subtract the taxes, surcharges and service fees that remain after redemption. The difference is how this redemption compares with that cash ticket.

Do not divide a redemption chart into one value per mile for every route. No award seat, higher taxes, or a date change will move that difference.

Expiry follows activity, not the credit date you remember

Cathay's terms say that at least one eligible transaction every 18 months extends the activity-based miles balance by 18 months. Eligible transactions include earning miles and redeeming miles. The terms also say some refunds and cancellations are not eligible.

If an account has no activity for 36 consecutive months, remaining miles, Status Points and unused benefits are cancelled. Time-based miles may be renewed for a fee and then fall under the activity-based rule. The fee is whatever the page shows at the time; this article does not state an amount that was not on the booking page.

FAQ

Do enough miles mean an award seat?
No. The terms say redemption is capacity-controlled and the airline may limit award seats. Use the booking search.
Is a redemption free of cash?
The passenger still pays applicable departure taxes, airport or government fees, fuel surcharges, security and insurance charges, and other authorised fees. The amount is shown at booking.
Can a family's miles be pooled into one account?
No. The miles must already be in the membership account making the redemption. Different accounts cannot be pooled.
Do miles expire?
Under the activity-based rule, an eligible transaction every 18 months extends the balance by 18 months. No activity for 36 consecutive months cancels the remaining miles.
How long is an award ticket valid?
The terms say 12 months from the date of issue, unless stated otherwise. Changes and refunds have their own fees and conditions.
